Paradentology

Periodontal disease is an inflammatory disease affecting the hinge apparatus of the tooth, the gum and, in its advanced stage, the bone. The treatment of gingivitis (periodontitis) is dealt with by periodontology, a branch of dentistry. We specialize in conservative methods of treatment as well as the latest surgical methods such as guided tissue regeneration of the periodontium.

How does periodontal disease develop?

Periodontal disease is an advanced stage of gingivitis. How to proceed in the prevention of this unpleasant disease? We will discuss these and other questions with you thoroughly. And if your gingivitis has already broken out, we will start an effective periodontal treatment.

Periodontal disease - the causes of gum disease

The most common cause of periodontal disease are bacterial infections in the gums that break down connective tissue. It is almost always caused by poor oral hygiene and lack of prevention. Poor dietary composition, excessive alcohol and nicotine consumption and, last but not least, untreated tooth decay and tartar build-up can also be to blame.

Symptoms of periodontal disease in 3 stages

Like other insidious diseases, gingivitis in the initial stages does not hurt.So how do you know if you have periodontal disease? Symptoms are divided according to severity into:

  • Mild stage of periodontal disease - manifested by mild swelling and redness, accompanied by occasional bleeding when eating or brushing. After consultation with a periodontist, you will begin treatment with proper cleaning, lifestyle and supportive products.
  • The middle stage of periodontal disease - developed inflammation is characterized by purulent pockets, bad breath, bleeding gums, exposed tooth necks and increased wobbling of the teeth. At this stage, we remove supragingival and subgingival tartar and proceed to surgical treatment if necessary.
  • Critical stage of periodontal disease - alarming symptoms progress to loosening to tooth loss. The jawbone recedes and inflammation spreads throughout the body where it attacks internal organs. Surgical treatment is inevitable.

Treatment of periodontal disease

The disease is treatable, but it is necessary to intervene as soon as possible. The diagnosis is made by a periodontist on the basis of a dental examination. To establish the diagnosis and subsequent treatment, an X-ray examination must also be taken.

The treatment itself is conservative, during which the periodontist cleans all the inflamed areas, or surgical, in which the gums are removed with a scalpel and the inflamed areas are cleaned under local anaesthesia. The treatment is usually supported by disinfectant solutions and antibiotics to eradicate bacteria. The aesthetic solution is usually bone bed plasty, aesthetic gum correction or covering of the exposed neck.
